Pararescue Initial Qualification and Training (IQT) Course Graduation Requirements

This Course Training Standard applies to:

L3AQR1T231-000 (PDS Code 5KL) - Pararescue

TBD (PDS XX) - Combat Rescue Officer AFSC 13DXA

This 49 day course has the primary mission of screening and training candidates for the Pararescue specialty through a demanding mental and physical training environment. The scope of training requires students to be put through a rigorous physical and mentally stressful training program in order to give them the exposure to stresses that allow them to choose whether they are comfortable with such an operating/training environment and prepare them for all pipeline courses and their final AFSC awarding course. The course includes psychological resilience and performance enhancement training and assessments in physical, mental, and academic areas.

Initial Qualification Training course requirements:

1. Perform Physical Abilities Stamina Test (PAST).

2. Psychological enhancement training:

a. Complete psychological questionnaire.
b. Participate in clasroom and practical exercises to enhance stress resilience.

3. Basic career field knowledge:

a. Identify facts about AF core values.
b. Identify Pararescue careef field history and traditions.
c. Identify duties of a Pararescue specialist.
d. Identify basic medical terminology.
e. Identify facts about nutrition/sports medicine.
f. Identify facts about metric conversion.
g. Identify facts about dive terminology/tables.
h. Identify facts about diver physics.

4. Run Training:

a. Complete 6-mile distance run within 45 minutes.
b. Complete 10-mile long slow distance run.
c. Complete individualized interval run training.
d. Complete individualized FARTLEK run training.

5. Physical Training:

a. Perform 75 sit-ups within 2 minutes.
b. Perform 13 pull-ups within 1 minute.
c. Perform 70 push-ups within 2 minutes.
d. Complete 30ft rope climb.
e. Perform calisthenics IAW CSC (Course Standards Chart).
f. Perform circuit (weight) training IAW CSC.
g. Perform grass/guerrilla drills IAW CSC.
h. Perform medicine ball circuit training IAW CSC.
i. Complete 10-mile ruck march at 20 minute per mile pace.
j. Complete the confidence/obstacle course.

6. Perform Life-Saving Techniques.

7. Surface Swim Training:

a. Perform 4000 meter fin swim within 80 minutes.
b. Perform 2000 meter open water fin swim with BDUs, BCs, and ruck.
c. Perform 2000 meter water compass fin swim with BDUs and BCs.
d. Complete individualized fin sprint training.
e. Complete individualized freestyle swim training.
f. Complete individualized UDT underwater recovery stroke training.

8. Water Confidence Training:

a. Perform drown proofing techniques.
b. Tread water for 2 minutes 30 seconds.
c. Perform full equipment tread for 30 seconds.
d. Perform buddy breathing techniques for 2 minutes under simulated adverse conditions.
e. Perform 16lb weight belt surface swim for 7 minutes.
f. Perform flooded mask drills IAW CSC.
g. Correct SCUBA equipment rigging deficiencies.

9. Perform Alternate Water Confidence Drills.

10. Underwater Swim Training:

a. Complete 25 meter underwater swim slick (5 repetitions at a 1 minute 30 seconds interval.
b. Complete 50 meter underwater swim with giant stride entry.

11. Underwater Equipment Recovery Techniques:

a. Recover mask and snorkel from a distance of 30 meters.
b. Perform equipment recovery techniques-16lb weight belt after 1 minute of treading water.
c. Perform 20lb clump retrieval.
d. Perform underwater knot tying-3 knot series.

12. Field Training Exercise with Sleep Deprivation:

a. Participate in team building exercises IAW CSC.
b. Participate in reconnaissance exercise IAW CSC.
c. Participate in recovery exercise IAW CSC.
d. Complete leadership reaction course (LRC).
e. Complete adverse terrain course (ATC) IAW CSC.
f. Participate in urban orienteering IAW FM 21-20 and CSC.
g. Present impromptu speech.

13. Initial Career Field Qualifications:

a. Complete Flight Physical requirements.
b. Complete physiological training (Altitude chamber).
c. Complete CPR certification requirements.
d. Complete AFQC (Air Force Qualification Course) for M-9 Pistol.
e. Complete AFQC for M-16 Rifle.
