That Others May Live : The True Story of a PJ, A Member of America's Most Daring Rescue Force This is the book you have been waiting for!
The remarkable true story of the U.S. Military's most elite unit--made famous by their exploits in the bestsellerThe Perfect Storm--as told by a 20-year veteran still on active duty.
They rescue the Green Berets and Navy Seals when they get in trouble. They jump out of airplanes at 25,000 feet, where it's too high to breathe, and at 800 feet, where it's too low to survive unless you're lightening quick on the release. They rescue people 1,000 miles out at sea, or in deserts, or in polar regions. And that's in peacetime, to stay in shape. In wartime, they really go into action.
They are Pararescue Jumpers. PJs for short, a highly selective corps of 300 men serving the U.S. Air Force and the Air National Guard. That Others May Live is a riveting profile of the PJs, seen through the eyes of Jack Brehm, who has spent 20 years rescuing people in seemingly hopeless peril, serving with fellow PJs who routinely do the same. As startling as a plunge into icy water, as thrilling as a freefall through the night sky, these are stories of the times the PJs beat the odds, the times they didn't, and what it's like to work where the daily grind of your job isn't just an expression; it's a reality.

Spec Ops : Case Studies in Special Operations Warfare : Theory and Practice This book is a complete theory on the way modern special operations have, and should be conducted. The six examples of successful operations outlined in the book demonstrate the theories he presents, and he evaluates the success (and failure) of the operations in a clear and understandable manner. As a textbook, it is a comprehensive, scientific guide for all special forces trainees, personnel, and commanders. As a general interst book, it is easily understood by those who have some familiarity with military terms and procedures. The book would be of little interest to the casual reader who is only mildly interested in the military; it is a book of theory and application written for those who are in or are familiar with the miltary. However, few other books are as clear a guide to the conduct of warfare as this book is. It is designed to be, and is, a comprehensive textbook on special operations. |

Blackhawk Down: A story of modern war I have not read this book...but it is on order. MSgt Tim Wilkinson (one of the PJ's on this operation) recommended this book as soon as it was published...thats good enough for me! |

Unconventional Warfare: Rebuilding US Special Operations Forces: While
offering insights into how the U.S. government makes policy, Susan
Marquis also gives a revealing look at the special operations
community, including its storied past, the extreme training, and the
recent operational experience that continues to forge its distinctive
organizational mission and culture. She describes the decade-long
struggle to rebuild special operations forces, resulting in new SOF
organizations with independence that is unique among U.S. military
forces, an independence approaching that of a new military service.Read my online review at amazon.com to get "the rest of the story". |

Code name Brightlight
This well-documented book makes use of numerous interviews with key participants, personal
diaries and correspondence, archival research in many repositories, and the unearthing of some
material not previously exploited. In particular, Veith has made effective use of the POW/MIA
microfilm collection in the Library of Congress, which includes some National Security Agency
intercept material that is rarely made public. |

The Perfect Storm
Meteorologists called the storm that hit North America's eastern seaboard in October 1991 a "perfect storm" because of the rare combination of factors that created it. For everyone else, it was
perfect hell. In The Perfect Storm, author Sebastian Junger conjures for the reader the meteorological conditions that created the "storm of the century" and the impact the storm had on many of the people caught in it. Chief among these are the six crew members of the swordfish boat the Andrea Gail, all of whom were lost 500 miles from home beneath roiling seas and high waves. Working from published material, radio dialogues, eyewitness accounts, and the experiences of people who have survived similar events, Junger attempts to re-create the last moments of the
Andrea Gail as well as the perilous high-seas rescues of other victims of the storm. Also available in paperback. |

Orr Kelly tells for the first time the complete, uncensored history of Air Force special operations: a

pilots and their aid to Nazi partisans to their missions during Desert Storm, Kelly describes all the
action. 15 photos. |

life as a rock climber. Fortunately, John Long's guide to climbing anchors is a definitive source, with
sections on natural, equalized, haul bag, and rappelling anchors. Whether you're using
spring-loaded, camming devices or the old-school, passive tri-cams, Long presents a number of

Into Thin Air
In
March 1996, Outside magazine sent veteran journalist and seasoned climber Jon Krakauer on an
expedition led by celebrated Everest guide Rob Hall. Despite the expertise of Hall and the other
leaders, by the end of summit day eight people were dead. Krakauer's book is at once the story of
the ill-fated adventure and an analysis of the factors leading up to its tragic end. An awesome book that I read in about a day and a half!!! Read Amazon.com's interview with the author. |
