Status: X-Mozilla-Status: 2003 Rogue Agent, thank you, thank you! I had never thought to have Jon or Otrics in the book. Jon seemed like such a minor footnote at best to the Glonal kOS story. But as RA points out so, um, pungeantly, if I had done a web search on that kiddie porn catalog I would have found out that it was well-known -- including in the Canadain media -- that it was actually a vicious libel attack on Barnard. As one news story puts it "The FBI, which described the message as a hoax, interviewed Barnard..." The hoax message also qualified as one of the largest, if not THE largest, information warfare attacks in history, tying up thousands of law enforcement officials and making life for Barnard, who was well-known on several Usenet news groups, not fun. The email message was forged, in at least two cases being reported as having originated from outside AOL. But the email forger(s) were never caught. Now -- here come the amazing coincidences. AA told me Jon is the publicity manager for Global kOS. Jon's web site lists Materva as a collaborator in its creation and is full of the doings of Global kOS and email crime in general. Another amazing coincidence -- Jon's web site makes out to be the *only* one I could find that a) has the unabridged fake Barnard kiddie porn catalog b) acts like it has never heard the FBI cleared Barnard beyound any reasonable shadow of doubt -- in fact Jon only puts in enough weasel wording that it might not be genuine to avoid prosecution c) has lots of stuff about email crime on its site -- but somehow fails to mention that the Barnard thing is the ugliest, largest email crime in history d) is closely associated with a hacker gang that specializes in email crime hmmmmm..... So now we have Jon being the only person I could find continuing this massive libel campaign against Barnard. Then I complain about the catalog to modify, and bam, Jon, Modify, AA and RA get ugly. Two of them make threats. Both legal -- libel suit -- and hacker retaliation are discussed. I keep up the exchange because this hypersensitivity tells me something is up. I should have realized all this talk about libel was because Jon was upset at my stumbling across his continuation of the most famous libel case in Internet history. Were he and some other Global kOS people trying to scare me off before I realized what was up? Or were they just expressing their natural inclination to hassle people? So -- is Jon merely doing this out of ignorance and his natural temper? Or is there a deeper story? With Jon's sensitivity to the crime of libel, would he really put that vicious thing about Barnard on his web site without doing even the most elementary check on it''s authenticity? In fact he claims on his web site to have done such a check, and claims to not have found evidence one way or another of a hoax -- this compounds the libel. But, it could just be ignorance of how to do a Web search, and a lack of journalistic ethics. So.... do any of you guys wich to comment on these amazing coincidences? And, yes, RA, from here on I'll be more careful not to miss news of the most fascinating sort by just carelessly skipping over stuff that's right under my nose like I would have without your help. If you dig up anything more on Jon and Global kOS and any possible connection to Barnard, pleaaassseeeeee tell me about it. Thanks!
