Bulletins Topics This issue is only present on the Intel Platform Edition of Solaris. Sun announces the release of patches for Intel Platform Editions of Solaris(tm) 8, 7, and 2.6 (SunOS(tm) 5.8_x86, 5.7_x86, and 5.6_x86) which relate to a vulnerability in user-supplied arguments to a syscall on i386 platforms. Sun recommends that you install the patches listed in section 4 immediately on systems running SunOS 5.8_x86, 5.7_x86, and 5.6_x86. or Trusted Solaris 8_x86 and 7_x86. 2. Who is Affected Vulnerable: Intel Platform Edition of Solaris 8, 7, and 2.6 (SunOS 5.8_x86, 5.7_x86, and 5.6_x86). Intel Platform Edition of Trusted Solaris 8 and 7. Not vulnerable: All SPARC Platform Editions of Solaris and Intel Platform Editions of Solaris prior to 2.6. 3. Understanding the Vulnerability The Intel i386 architecture supports a protection and segmentation model which allows different levels of privilege. Carefully constructed arguments could allow access to higher privilege than intended which could be used to control arbitrary addresses in kernel memory. 4. List of Patches The following patches are available in relation to the above problems.
