From agent99@sgi.com Fri Nov 30 23:47:35 2001 From: SGI Security Coordinator To: agent99@sgi.com Date: Fri, 30 Nov 2001 13:07:05 -0800 Subject: IRIX CDE vulnerabilities [The following text is in the "iso-8859-1" character set] [Your display is set for the "US-ASCII" character set] [Some characters may be displayed incorrectly] -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- ______________________________________________________________________________ SGI Security Advisory Title: CDE vulnerabilities Number: 20011107-01-P Reference: CERT CA-2001-31 Date: November 30, 2001 ______________________________________________________________________________ - ----------------------- - --- Issue Specifics --- - ----------------------- Security Focus has reported that several suid root CDE utilities have buffer overruns which can lead to security compromises. These utilities are "dtaction", "dtprintinfo", "dtterm", "dtsession", and "dtspcd". There is a related issue with the CDE ToolTalk "ttsession" messaging server's usage of a weak RPC authentication mechanism. Because of this, the ttsession process can be manipulated to execute unauthorized arbitrary programs with the privileges of the running ttsession. SGI has investigated the issues and recommends the following steps for neutralizing the exposure. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that these measures be implemented on ALL vulnerable SGI systems. These issues have been corrected in future releases of CDE. - -------------- - --- Impact --- - -------------- CDE is an optional product and is not installed by default. The dtspcd and ttsession vulnerabilities can be exploited by a remote user. The other vulnerabilities would require a local user account on the host system in order to exploit them. The exploitation of these vulnerabilities can lead to a root compromise. These vulnerabilities have been reported by Security Focus, CERT, BugTraq, Last Stage of Delirium Research Group, and ISS, and have been publicly discussed in Usenet newsgroups and security mailing lists. CERTŪ Advisory CA-2001-31 Buffer Overflow in CDE Subprocess Control Service: http://www.cert.org/advisories/CA-2001-31.html - ---------------------------- - --- Temporary Workaround --- - ---------------------------- SGI acknowledges that it may not always be possible to immediately install patches or upgrade the operating system. In those cases, we recommend removing the suid bit from the relevant binaries until the patch can be applied. This will result in reduced functionality of the system, and will not completely secure the system from these vulnerabilities. If you want to do this, please follow this procedure: % su - root # cd /usr/dt/bin # chmod 755 dtaction # chmod 755 dtprintinfo # chmod 755 dtsession # chmod 755 dtterm # chmod 755 rpc.ttdbserverd # exit It is not necessary to reboot the system after doing this. You should install the patch or upgrade to a later version of CDE as soon as it is possible to do so. - ---------------- - --- Solution --- - ---------------- SGI has provided a patch for CDE 5.1 which can be applied to an IRIX 6.5.x system with CDE installed. The problem will be fixed in a future release of CDE. CDE Version Vulnerable? Patch # Other Actions ----------- ----------- ------- ------------- CDE 5.0 unknown Note 1 CDE 5.1 yes 4416 Note 2 NOTES 1) This version of CDE has been retired. For more information, see Software Product Knowledge Database http://support.sgi.com/spk/ 2) This patch can be installed on IRIX 6.5-6.5.14 with CDE 5.1 installed. ##### Patch File Checksums #### The actual patch will be a tar file containing the following files: Filename: README.patch.4416 Algorithm #1 (sum -r): 36835 8 README.patch.4416 Algorithm #2 (sum): 53529 8 README.patch.4416 MD5 checksum: 5CB39FFFABF73E391A462E64DB4A63DD Filename: patchSG0004416 Algorithm #1 (sum -r): 39697 3 patchSG0004416 Algorithm #2 (sum): 14998 3 patchSG0004416 MD5 checksum: C1BB56CB64AFD836F002DB1DADA594D0 Filename: patchSG0004416.cde_sw Algorithm #1 (sum -r): 33090 4336 patchSG0004416.cde_sw Algorithm #2 (sum): 43662 4336 patchSG0004416.cde_sw MD5 checksum: 4A2D8F97737823CAB1B6F581B9BA1722 Filename: patchSG0004416.idb Algorithm #1 (sum -r): 58676 4 patchSG0004416.idb Algorithm #2 (sum): 15813 4 patchSG0004416.idb MD5 checksum: 8F2B1C356965B35AD874E055C221032B - ------------------- - --- Information --- - ------------------- SGI Security Advisories can be found at: http://www.sgi.com/support/security/ and ftp://patches.sgi.com/support/free/security/advisories/ SGI Security Patches can be found at: http://www.sgi.com/support/security/ and ftp://patches.sgi.com/support/free/security/patches/ SGI patches for IRIX can be found at the following patch servers: http://support.sgi.com/irix/ and ftp://patches.sgi.com/ SGI freeware updates for IRIX can be found at: http://freeware.sgi.com/ SGI fixes for SGI open sourced code can be found on: http://oss.sgi.com/projects/ SGI patches and RPMs for Linux can be found at: http://support.sgi.com/linux/ or http://oss.sgi.com/projects/sgilinux-combined/download/security-fixes/ SGI patches for Windows NT or 2000 can be found at: http://support.sgi.com/nt/ IRIX 5.2-6.4 Recommended/Required Patch Sets can be found at: http://support.sgi.com/irix/ and ftp://patches.sgi.com/support/patchset/ IRIX 6.5 Maintenance Release Streams can be found at: http://support.sgi.com/colls/patches/tools/relstream/index.html IRIX 6.5 Software Update CDs can be obtained from: http://support.sgi.com/irix/swupdates/ The primary SGI anonymous FTP site for security advisories and patches is patches.sgi.com (216.32.174.211).
