This new patch provides an SGI port of the sendmail 8.9.3 distribution for IRIX 6.5.7 with SGI sendmail modifications open-sourced. Both source code for sendmail 8.9.3 and the SGI modifications to extend sendmail capabilities on SGI systems are included with patch 3865. - ----------------------- - --- Issue Specifics --- - ----------------------- The sendmail distribution from http://www.sendmail.org/ provides a means to deliver and receive network mail. Older versions of sendmail were vulnerable to several mail relay vulnerabilities which allowed it to relay unsolicited email such as SPAM. sendmail 8.9.3 includes improved anti-spam and anti-relay capabilities to minimize this issue. SGI has investigated the issue and recommends the following steps for neutralizing the exposure. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that these measures be implemented on ALL vulnerable SGI systems. - -------------- - --- Impact --- - -------------- sendmail is installed by default on all releases of IRIX. A local user account is not needed to exploit the sendmail's mail relay capabilities to relay unsolicited mail such as SPAM. These vulnerabilities has been publicly discussed in Usenet newsgroups and mailing lists. - -------------------------- - --- Temporary Solution --- - -------------------------- There are no current plans to release a sendmail 8.9.3 patch for older releases of IRIX. Source code to sendmail 8.9.3 can be obtained from http://www.sendmail.org/ and compiles under older releases of IRIX. Source code to sendmail 8.9.3 and SGI extensions can be obtained from ftp://sgigate.sgi.com/patches/6.5.7/sendmail.8.9.3.tar.gz On older releases of IRIX, the file sendmail.8.9.3.tar.gz can be unpacked using GNU gzip tools found on http://freeware.sgi.com/ Once sendmail.8.9.3.tar.gz has been unpacked, SGI patches to sendmail 8.9.3 can be found in a separate directory called patches. SGI patches to sendmail 8.9.3 have been (or will be) submitted to sendmail.org for inclusion in the base source distribution. ##### Source File Checksums #### Filename: sendmail.8.9.3.tar.gz Algorithm #1 (sum -r): 42616 2223 sendmail.8.9.3.tar.gz Algorithm #2 (sum): 42508 2223 sendmail.8.9.3.tar.gz MD5 checksum: 3CD39FE362E43B5CCBE230050E6D7500 Compiling sendmail 8.9.3 for IRIX is not supported by SGI. The SGI supported solution for sendmail 8.9.3 is patch 3865 for IRIX 6.5.7. - ---------------- - --- Solution --- - ---------------- Install patch 3865 for IRIX 6.5.7 release streams. Patch 3865 will only install on IRIX 6.5.7 release streams. Patch 3865 includes source code to sendmail 8.9.3 as well as SGI extensions. If you have not received an IRIX 6.5.7 CD for IRIX 6.5, contact your SGI Support Provider or download the IRIX 6.5.7 Maintenance Release Stream from: http://support.sgi.com/colls/patches/tools/relstream/index.html Information about installing IRIX 6.5.7 can be found at: http://support.sgi.com/irix/index.html There are no current plans to release a sendmail 8.9.3 patch for older releases of IRIX. Patches are available via anonymous FTP and your service/support provider. The primary SGI anonymous FTP site for security information and patches is sgigate.sgi.com (204.94.209.1).
