From agent99@sgi.com Mon Sep 2 01:11:06 2002 From: SGI Security Coordinator To: agent99@sgi.com Date: Thu, 29 Aug 2002 13:00:38 -0700 (PDT) Subject: Netscape JRE vulnerability on IRIX -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- _____________________________________________________________________________ SGI Security Advisory Title: Netscape JAVA JRE vulnerability Number: 20020807-01-I Date: August 29, 2002 Reference: CAN-2002-0058 Reference: SUN Security Advisory #0216 _____________________________________________________________________________ - ----------------------- - --- Issue Specifics --- - ----------------------- It has been reported that the Netscape Communicator versions that SGI has shipped with IRIX have security vulnerabilities in the JAVA JRE code. See http://home.netscape.com/security/ http://sunsolve.Sun.COM/pub-cgi/retrieve.pl?doctype=coll&doc=secbull/216 ...for additional details. SGI has investigated the issue and recommends the following steps for neutralizing the exposure. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that these measures be implemented on ALL vulnerable SGI systems. These issues have been corrected in future releases of IRIX. - -------------- - --- Impact --- - -------------- The Netscape Communicator package is not installed by default on IRIX 6.5 systems, it is supplied on the IRIX Applications CD. To determine the version of IRIX you are running, execute the following command: # /bin/uname -R That will return a result similar to the following: # 6.5 6.5.16f The first number ("6.5") is the release name, the second ("6.5.16f" in this case) is the extended release name. The extended release name is the "version" we refer to throughout this document. To see if Netscape Communicator is installed, execute the following command: $ versions -b netscape I = Installed, R = Removed Name Date Description I netscape 09/19/2001 Netscape Communicator Client, 4.79 If the netscape package is installed, the system is vulnerable. This vulnerability was assigned the following CVE: http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CAN-2002-0058 - ---------------------------- - --- Temporary Workaround --- - ---------------------------- SGI realizes that there are times when upgrading the operating system is inconvenient or not possible, and in those cases we recommend that you visit the following URL and install the upgraded Java Runtime Environment (JRE) available there: http://www.sgi.com/products/evaluation/6.x_java_plugin_1.1.1/ The upgraded Java Runtime Environment (JRE), 1.3.1_02, is available from: http://www.sgi.com/products/evaluation/6.5_java2_1.3.1_02/ To get Netscape to use the upgraded JRE, you should have the Netscape Java plugin installed, available from: http://www.sgi.com/products/evaluation/6.x_java_plugin_1.1.1/ Another workaround would be to disable Java support at Preferences->Advanced, but obviously this will remove functionality. - ---------------- - --- Solution --- - ---------------- With IRIX 6.5.18, JRE 1.3.1_02 will be on the 6.5.18 Applications CD, so browsers with the Java plugin can use it by default. Our recommendation is to upgrade to IRIX 6.5.18 when it becomes available. OS Version Vulnerable?
