From agent99@boytoy.csd.sgi.com Thu Jan 9 22:41:20 1997 Date: Thu, 9 Jan 1997 19:11:28 -0800 From: SGI Security Coordinator To: agent99@sgi.com Subject: SGI Security Advisory 19970102-01-PX - XFS Filesystem Security DISTRIBUTION RESTRICTIONS: NONE - FOR PUBLIC RELEASE -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- ______________________________________________________________________________ Silicon Graphics Inc. Security Advisory Title: XFS Filesystem Security Number: 19970102-01-PX Date: January 9, 1997 ______________________________________________________________________________ Silicon Graphics provides this information freely to the SGI user community for its consideration, interpretation, implementation and use. Silicon Graphics recommends that this information be acted upon as soon as possible. Silicon Graphics will not be liable for any indirect, special, or consequential damages arising from the use of, failure to use or improper use of any of the instructions or information in this Security Advisory. ______________________________________________________________________________ Silicon Graphics Engineering and Worldwide Customer Service divisions have become aware of a potential security issue within the XFS filesystem available for IRIX 5.3, 6.1, 6.2, 6.3 and 6.4. Silicon Graphics Inc. has investigated the issue and recommends the following steps for neutralizing the exposure. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that these measures be implemented on ALL SGI systems running IRIX versions 5.3, 6.1, 6.2, 6.3 and 6.4. This issue will be corrected in future releases of IRIX. - -------------- - --- Impact --- - -------------- The XFS filesystem is an SGI specific architecture for organizing and accessing files on a local physical system. The XFS filesystem is an optional product for IRIX versions 5.3 and 6.1 but is the default filesystem for IRIX 6.2, 6.3 and 6.4. Silicon Graphics systems that are using XFS filesystems may be vulnerable to a security issue where files may be truncated. A local account is required in order to exploit this vulnerability both locally and remotely. It is believed that this vulnerability information is not public knowledge and this has afforded SGI the opportunity to fully investigate this issue and provide the following information and solutions. - ---------------- - --- Solution --- - ---------------- Please, note that this security issue is only applicable *IFF* the XFS filesystem software is installed *and* XFS filesystems are in use on the system. To determine if the XFS Filesystem software is installed on a particular system, the following command can be used: % /usr/sbin/versions -Inv | grep -i sw.xfs I eoe2.sw.xfs 09/16/96 XFS Filesystem In the above case, the XFS filesystem software is installed and the next step is to determine if a XFS filesystem is being used on the system. If no output is returned by the versions command, the XFS filesystem software is not installed and no further action is required. To determine if a XFS filesystem is being used on the system, the following command can be used: % /etc/mount | grep -i xfs /dev/root on / type xfs (rw,raw=/dev/rroot) In the above case, there is an XFS filesystem in use on the system and the following steps can be used to neutralize the exposure by installing the recommended patches below. If no output is returned by the mount command, there is not an XFS filesystem in use on the system. Although at this time no further action is required, in the future, if an XFS filesystem is used on the system, the steps below should be used. Unfortunately, there are no immediate or temporary workarounds for this issue. The issue can only be addressed with a patch. **** IRIX 3.x, 4.x, 5.0.x, 5.1.x, and 5.2 **** The XFS file system was not available for these versions of IRIX and therefore are not vulnerable. No further action is required. **** IRIX 5.3 **** For the IRIX operating system version 5.3, an inst-able patch has been generated and made available via anonymous FTP and your service/support provider. The patch is number 1409 and will install on IRIX 5.3 only. The SGI anonymous FTP site is sgigate.sgi.com (204.94.209.1) or its mirror, ftp.sgi.com. Patch 1409 can be found in the following directories on the FTP server: ~ftp/Security or ~ftp/Patches/5.3 ##### Checksums #### The actual patch will be a tar file containing the following files: Filename: README.patch.1409 Algorithm #1 (sum -r): 16070 30 README.patch.1409 Algorithm #2 (sum): 30025 30 README.patch.1409 MD5 checksum: 760B0360850D998344E92986E8CD67F7 Filename: patchSG0001409 Algorithm #1 (sum -r): 64133 2 patchSG0001409 Algorithm #2 (sum): 60012 2 patchSG0001409 MD5 checksum: 1D0B92D84EFB72D86CDD3755E129CCBA Filename: patchSG0001409.eoe2_sw Algorithm #1 (sum -r): 45878 3977 patchSG0001409.eoe2_sw Algorithm #2 (sum): 36715 3977 patchSG0001409.eoe2_sw MD5 checksum: 185D616DA7934E0A8887A3AC8FDC7896 Filename: patchSG0001409.idb Algorithm #1 (sum -r): 45250 5 patchSG0001409.idb Algorithm #2 (sum): 39612 5 patchSG0001409.idb MD5 checksum: 48C3EC7CEFB97CEEC2D3D9AB2CA43A6C **** IRIX 6.0.x **** For the IRIX operating system versions 6.0.x, an upgrade to 6.1 or better is required first. When the upgrade is completed, then the security patches described in the following sections can be applied depending on the final version of the upgrade. **** IRIX 6.1 **** For the IRIX operating system version 6.1, an inst-able patch has been generated and made available via anonymous FTP and your service/support provider. The patch is number 1674 and will install only on IRIX 6.1. The SGI anonymous FTP site is sgigate.sgi.com (204.94.209.1) or its mirror, ftp.sgi.com.
