The Rainforest Alliance is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation of the world's endangered tropical forests. Our primary mission is to develop and promote economically viable and socially desirable alternatives to deforestation. These alternatives are designed in concert with local peoples to develop long-term, stable income for people living in or near forests. The Rainforest Alliance also educates the public about tropical forest conservation.
Primary Responsibilities:
Editorial/Production:
- Write, edit and handle the production of The Canopy, a bimonthly conservation newsletter;
- Supervise Communication Assistant's work on organization's WWW site;
- Write and edit publications and materials such as brochures, invitations and letters as needed for the Alliance programs, departments and special events;
- Coordinate design, production and printing of newsletters, brochures, and other materials;
- Assist with writing and production for annual report; and,
- Assist with other writing and print production projects as needed.
Public Relations/Media Outreach:
- Pitch stories to the media;
- Assist with media calls and inquiries;
- Assist with program related outreach efforts;
- Coordinate press events; and,
- Write and edit press releases.
Qualifications:
- At least 2 years experience in public relations, public affairs or journalism;
- Superior writing, editing and verbal communications skills;
- Knowledge of Web site design and management;
- Knowledge of desktop publishing and proficiency with computers - word processing and spreadsheets;
- College degree in appropriate field (English, journalism or public relations);
- Background in conservation or international development and understanding of related issues desired;
- Highly self-motivated and able to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment; and,
- A keen sense of humor.
Compensation:
Salary commensurate with experience. Competitive benefits include 4 weeks vacation, summer schedule, health and dental coverage, and 403b retirement plan.
