About the cemetaries here

You may have heard that we don't bury our dead here in New Orleans. It's true! It's impossible to bury anything in 6 feet of earth here, it becomes 6 feet of water quickly. So the plucky Cajuns adapted an elegant solution from the Egyptians. They build mausoleums, which I've seen as high as 4 'slots' high, but are usually only one or two spaces in height. I think they still call it "burying" but I'm not sure.
Another benefit to this method is that the space is reuseable. The impressive heat of the summer (which really starts in April) will cremate the contents slowly, so that in the course of several years all that's left is ashes of your long lost kin. Families buy cemetary plots and the grandkids get to use them too.

There are cemetaries all over the city, but if you're planning to visit them you should know that they usually close early (3 pm - hey, that's early here!).

Locations:

  • Basin and Conti streets, just outside of the French Quarter
  • Canal St, where it ends at Canal Blvd/Metairie Rd (?)
  • Uptown, on Prytania, in the Gardern District, just around the corner from Commander's Palace.

    Others?

What's your favorite Mardi Gras Parade?
Posted by alexm on Tuesday, August 01 @ 15:50:45 CDT (readed: 11 times - hits: 0)
    Parades
There are so many parades to see during the whole Mardi Gras season it's impossible to see them all! Kudos go out to the hearty souls who have tried...

So what's your favorite? Do you like the huge mega-floats of Endymion, do you think Rex is king? Are you more of a Zulu fan, or do you identify with the Bacchus message?
